How Do Penalty Points Work In F1? 5x2i2o

Just like driving on the road, those on the F1 2025 grid face punishment if they don’t adhere to the rules.

Stewards at each race can out hand a wide-variety of punishments. This includes warnings, fines, time penalties, drive-through penalties and even disqualification.

On top of those, F1 drivers can receive penalty points which are added to their FIA Super Licence.

Drivers who rack up 12 penalty points over a 12-month period will receive a one-race ban.

Has Any Driver Been Handed A Race Ban? 4k2q54

Former F1 driver Kevin Magnussen is the only one to receive a race ban under the current penalty points system.

The Danish driver missed last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix after he amassed 12 points. He was replaced by Oliver Bearman for the race – who again replaced him for the 2025 season.

Magnussen was given a race ban after he made with Pierre Gasly at the Italian Grand Prix. He also received penalty points that season for collisions with Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant, as well as leaving the track multiple times while racing Lewis Hamilton in Miami.

Before the penalty points system was introduced, drivers including Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve and Eddie Irvine all received race-bans.

Which Driver Is Closest To A Race Ban? 5k1a4c

Max Verstappen still is the closest driver to a one-race ban with eight penalty points on the board.

The four-time champion will receive a ban if he picks up four more points between now and the Austrian Grand Prix on June 29.

On June 30, he will drop to six points as that is when the points for colliding with Lando Norris in Austria last year will expire.

He is now just three points ahead of Fernando Alonso and Liam Lawson.

However, Alonso will drop to just two points on the day of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on April 20.

Lawson moved up to five points at the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix. He was given one point for his collision with Lance Stroll and two for an accident with Nico Hulkenberg later in the same race.

Below, is each driver’s current total, how they received their penalty points and when they will expire.
