The latest Taiwo Awoniyi injury update reveals that the Nottingham Forest striker has undergone abdominal surgery after colliding with the post against Leicester.

Sunday’s Premier League clash between Nottingham Forest and rivals Leicester City ended in a 2-2 draw, but left Awoniyi needing ‘urgent’ medical attention.

The Nigerian forward, 27, clattered into the post in the closing minutes while attempting to get on the end of an Anthony Elanga cross.

After receiving pitch-side treatment, he continued playing, but was clearly in severe pain.

In a statement on the club’s website, Forest said: “The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City.

“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. The club will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Awoniyi had only come on as a replacement minutes before his injury.

The striker was sent on in place of Ibrahim Sangare as Forest searched for a late winner.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen marching onto the field and remonstrating with manager Nuno Espirito Santo at full time, with many criticising the Greek businessman.

But he has since posted on social media to say the handling of Taiwo Awoniyi’s injury was partly the reason for his outburst.

He said: “Everybody – coaching staff, players, ers and including myself – we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff’s misjudgement on Taiwo’s ability to continue the game.

“This is natural, this is a demonstration of the ion we feel for our club.”

So far this season, Awoniyi has two goals in all competitions, having played 32 times.
