There has been plenty of chatter in recent years about a potential expansion of the NBA. Adding new teams has appeared to be on the league’s agenda, and both Las Vegas and Seattle have been widely rumored as the cities garnering the most consideration.
Could Mexico City Be Considered For NBA Expansion?
But according to recent comments by league commissioner Adam Silver, those are not the only cities that are being looked at. Other places around the country are being weighed as options, and he even went as far as to mention the possibility of Mexico City as a potential location.
Seattle has been a topic of conversation ever since the SuperSonics abandoned the city in 2008. An investment group from Oklahoma City moved the team and became the Thunder, who are having some serious success lately, adding salt in the wound for fans in the northwest.

But those in the Emerald City are still ionate about basketball, and even the team that left them, and have been atop the list of rumored destinations for possible NBA expansion.
Given the recent influx of sporting events and teams making their way to Las Vegas, it makes sense that Southern Nevada would be on the list of cities likely to host an NBA team. Both the NHL and NFL have established homes in Sin City in the past decade, and the luring of an MLB franchise is still very much in the works. It would make sense for basketball, as well, and a recent All-Star Weekend held on The Strip made for something of an audition.
Over 30 Games In Total Have Been Played In CDMX In Past Years
While appearing on the Dan Patrick Show this past week, Silver said that he was hesitant to name cities in specific. But did let slip that the NBA is considering placing another international team to go along with the Toronto Raptors.

The NBA has always had an interest in Mexico City, and have played many international games there. The league has taken its product to CDMX a total or 32 different times over the years, including 15 regular season games. It is one of the few international options that makes sense for a permanent team, given the population and relative location to the United States.
In the same interview, however, Adam Silver reiterated that expansion is not a sure thing at this point, and that there would still be plenty of hurdles to clear in adding new NBA cities. But he did say that the issue will be discussed at league meetings, and that we might get some kind of answers within the next year or so.
