Jerry Jones and the most sports franchise in the United States.
What Is America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys About?
How ’bout them Cowboys!
The Dallas Cowboys are the most valuable sports franchise in America. Forbes set the Cowboys’ valuation at $10.1 billion in 2024, over $1 billion higher than its nearest competitor, the Golden State Warriors, at $8.8 billion.
In 2025, the Cowboys are still known as “America’s Team.” 40 years ago, the Cowboys’ brand was nowhere near as strong as it is today.
The turning point of the franchise occurred when Jones bought the team in 1989. Jones’ first move was to fire legendary coach Tom Landry and hire Jimmy Johnson, who coached the Miami Hurricanes from 1984 to 1988.
Firing Landry was one of many unpopular moves made by Jones, who became known as “The Gambler.”
Jones’ gamble paid off as the Cowboys formed a dynasty in the ’90s by winning three Super Bowls.
