With a Champions League quarter final against Real Madrid to contend with during the week, Mikel Arteta rested many of his starters against Everton in order to prevent any more injuries.
Despite the wholesale changes to Arenal’s starting lineup it was the Gunners who still dominated possession in the opening exchanges, although thy couldn’t quite craft any real opportunities of note.
The visitors made their early pressure count just after the half an hour mark as Arsenal took the lead on a quick break from the back.
A mixup at the back handed Raheem Sterling the ball inside his own half and after a long drive to the edge of the Everton box, the winger slid in Leandro Trossard who drilled a low shot past Jordan Pickford for his fifth goal of the season.
The game took a huge turn just one minute into the second half as Everton were awarded a penalty after Myles Lewis-Skelly fell on top of Jack Harrison in the box.

The responsibility fell to Iliman Ndiaye from the spot and on his first start since Christmas the 25-year-old was able to make it five out of five penalties scored this season and level the game up.
Although Arsenal made changes in the second half – bringing on Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka – they weren’t able to find a breakthrough goal and after a dull second period, the points were shared.

Mikel Arteta’s changes to the starting lineup spoke volumes before the game had even started and while Arsenal can still mathematically win the Premier League, the race is all but over.
Liverpool are now 11 points ahead in the league with a game in hand over their nearest pursuers and with just eight left to play, it is only a matter of time before they are crowned champions.
The Gunners face Liverpool at Anfield on May 11th and there is a very good chance that they will have to give the champions elect a guard of honour in their final meeting this season.
