O’Brien got on the end of a low cross from Vitalii Mykolenko to finally beat Flekken in the closing stages.

While a fairly even contest, the Brentford keeper deserves some plaudits for his work in denying Everton for as long as he did.

The results sees Brentford remain in 11th place in the Premier League table. With 38 points, they are unlikely to challenge the European places but are comfortably clear of any relegation threat.

Everton, meanwhile, drop one place to 15th, owing to Manchester United’s 3-2 victory against Ipswich Town.

The Toffees are also well above the drop zone, with 32 points putting them 15 above the bottom three.

Next up, Brentford host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday, with Everton travelling to Wolves later on the same day.
