Michael van Gerwen has been in a poor run of form in recent weeks, exiting the Player Championships early and exiting the tournament earlier than expected.

His form in the 2025 PDC Premier League has not been disastrous but the Dutchman has failed to deliver in recent weeks – failing to reach the final on any of the opening six nights.

The seven-time Premier League winner has not won a tournament since the Players Championship 27 event in October 2024.

His poor performances have left some fans wondering what could be wrong with the Dutchman and his close friend and fellow Dutch darts player, Vincent van der Voort, has revealed what could be bothering MvG.

Van Der Voort said: “He’s been struggling with a virus or infection for quite some time now. He picked it up during his holiday in Thailand back in early January, and he just hasn’t been able to shake it off. On top of that, he’s not in his best form.

“He was already at the doctor’s this morning. When is he supposed to take a break? He’s not in a position to just skip tournaments.”

Van Gerwen is set to appear in Night Seven of the PDC Premier League in Cardiff on Thursday 20th March, as he faces Luke Humphries in the opening match.

He will then go straight into another European Tour event and will need to perform to qualify for the Players Championship Finals as he is currently ranked in 70th.

Van Der Voort spoke about the issues that doctors have raised for MvG, as spending time on planes and travelling could have a negative impact on his health.

Van Der Voort said: “The doctor told him it’s really unwise to spend so much time on planes, as that’s where bacteria spread easily. But what choice does he have?”
