Winning the coveted US Open is one of the biggest achievements in professional golf. As one of the four major championships, winning the US Open is the epitome of success. But who was the last back-to-back US Open winner?

Reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau bids to win B2B US Opens at Oakmont Country Club in the third major of the year, but who was the last player to achieve the feat?

Who Was The Last Back-To-Back US Open Winner? 6w3q4n

Since it’s inception in 1895, there have only ever been seven back-to-back US Open winners in history.

The first player to achieve the feat was Scottish golfer Willie Anderson, who won back-to-back US Opens in three consecutive years, not just two.

The Scotsman won his first US Open in 1901, before then winning three in a row from 1903-1905. Anderson’s four US Open wins, three of which were back-to-back-to-back, is tied for the most amount of US Open victories in history.

The second golfer to win back-to-back US Opens was John McDermott in 1911 and 1912. The American won his first US Open in a playoff, before backing that up with a second consecutive US Open success the following year.

Bobby Jones, who won four US Opens in total, is another player who achieved US Open success in back-to-back years. Jones won the US Open in 1929 and 1930, and is one of only five players in history to have won the tournament as an amateur as well.

Ralph Guldahl was the next b2b US Open winner, achieving this feat with successes in both 1937 and 1938. His second was sheer dominance too, with Guldahl winning his second consecutive US Open by six strokes.

Ben Hogan, another player who has won four US Opens, won back-to-back titles in 1950 and 1951. These were the second and third of his US Open triumphs, with his first coming in 1948 and last in 1953.

Another of the golfers who won back-to-back US Opens was Curtis Strange. The American achieved this feat in 1988 and 1989, before never winning another tournament on the PGA Tour.

There is just one more player who has won b2b US Opens and is also happens to be the last player to achieve the feat. But who is the last back-to-back US Open winner exactly?

Brooks Koepka Was The Last Back-To-Back US Open Winner 4q4h6f

The last golfer to win back-to-back US Open was in fact Brooks Koepka. As well as boasting a net worth of $60m, Koepka is one of just seven men who have won the US Open in b2b tournaments.

The funny thing about Koepka is that he also holds the record as the last back-to-back PGA Championship winner as well.

Koepka has won five major championships in total – two US Opens and three PGA Championships. The American star won his b2b US Opens in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

‘Brooksy’ won the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills by four strokes on a score of -16. He then backed this up the following year at Shinnecock Hills to win his second consecutive US Open. This time he won it on +1 par.

There hasn’t been a back-to-back US Open winner since. That being said, reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau aims to become the eighth man in history to win b2b US Opens this year.

This year at Oakmont, reigning US Open winner Bryson DeChambeau has the opportunity to become just the eighth man to put his name in golfing folklore with a back-to-back US Open triumphs.

The two-time US Open winner aims to add his name to this list as we embark on the 125th US Open at Oakmont Country Club. It will be far from easy for the American to achieve this feat, but he is in good form and is one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Recent career Grand Slam winner Rory McIlroy will be amongst the contenders this week too, as will world number one and dominant golfing force Scottie Scheffler.

Phil Mickelson is chasing the career Grand Slam at the 125th US Open this year as well. These are just some of the players DeChambeau will have to beat if he wants to the elite list of back-to-back US Open winners.

Not only would Bryson cement his name in golfing history books with a second successive US Open win, but he would have conquered Oakmont, which boasts the longest par 3 in US Open history with the 300-yard eighth.

All eyes are on Bryson DeChambeau at the 2025 US Open from Oakmont to see if he can follow in the footsteps of Brooks Koepka, Ben Hogan and co in becoming the eighth back-to-back US Open winner.
