Longest Trophy Droughts For Premier League Clubs 68x3
Newcastle – 70 Years 5h3g4z
Newcastle’s 70-year wait to lift silverware is the longest gap out of any Premier League side between winning major trophies.
Their 2-1 victory over Liverpool was their first trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 1955 – seven decades ago.
Now the trophy jinx has been conquered, the Magpies will hope to regularly win trophies in the years going forward and challenge for football’s top prizes.
Nottingham Forest – 61 Years 103f1s
Nottingham Forest have gone 35 years without a major trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1990.
However, they have some way to go before they match the longest major trophy drought in their history.
After beating Derby County to win the FA Cup in 1898, they didn’t win a major trophy again until they won the competition for a second time in 1959 when they beat Luton Town.
Southampton – 49 Years Ongoing 16175m
Newcastle’s success is bad news for Southampton. Out of the Premier League teams to have won a major trophy, Southampton are now the side with the longest gap since their last triumph.
Southampton’s only major trophy came in the 1976 FA Cup final when they beat Manchester United.
Since then they have lost in two League Cup finals and came within three points of winning the league title in 1984.

Wolves – 45 Years Ongoing 4m3x3
Wolves sured their longest gap between major trophies in 2022.
The West Midlands side last won a trophy back in 1980 when they beat Nottingham Forest in the 1980 League Cup final.
They previously went 41 years without a trophy between 1908 and 1949 – beating Leicester City to lift the FA Cup to end their drought.
Ipswich Town – 44 Years Ongoing d441u
Sir Bobby Robson guided Ipswich to UEFA Cup glory 44 years ago when they beat AZ Alkmaar in a two-legged final.
Before that success, their longest wait for a major trophy came after they won the league title in 1962.
They ended their drought 16 years later by beating Arsenal in the 1978 FA Cup final.
West Ham – 43 Years b444a
West Ham ended their four-decade-plus wait to win a major trophy when they beat Fiorentina in the final of the Europa Conference League in 2023.
Before that, they last lifted a major trophy in 1980 when they beat Arsenal 1-0 in the FA Cup final.
In that 43-year wait, they lost in the 1981 League Cup final and had their hearts broken by a stunning Steven Gerrard performance in the 2006 FA Cup final.

Manchester United – 37 Years 583f5y
Manchester United’s current issues seem quite tame when you consider that they once had a 37-year gap between winning a major trophy.
After winning the league title for the second time in 1911, they did not win a major trophy again until 1948.
Sir Matt Busby guided United to the 1948 FA Cup final where they beat Blackpool to win his first out of 12 trophies.
Aston Villa – 37 Years 1m2p6x
It has been 29 years since Aston Villa won the League Cup during the 1995-96 season.
Should Villa not win a trophy again for eight years, then it would match their longest gap between winning trophies.
Villa had to wait 37 years between major trophies from winning the FA Cup final in 1920 and doing so again when they beat Manchester United in 1957.
Manchester City – 35 Years 3d3v4q
Manchester City rarely go a season without winning a major trophy these days but that wasn’t always the case.
Prior to the club’s takeover in 2008, their last major trophy was the League Cup in 1976.
City lifted the FA Cup in 2011 thanks to a Yaya Toure winner against Stoke City. Since then they have only endured three trophyless seasons.

Leicester City – 33 Years 1p4z2u
The Foxes didn’t win their first major trophy until 1964 when they won the League Cup.
It was then 33 years until they beat Middlesbrough to win the 1997 League Cup after a replay in which Steve Claridge scored a 100th minute winning goal.
Since the turn of the Millenium, Leicester won the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.
Everton – 3o Years Ongoing 421u4o
It feels like a long time since Everton stunned Manchester United to win the FA Cup final in 1995.
Since then they have not won any major trophy and only reached the FA Cup final on one occasion.
Everton’s previous longest gap between winning trophies was 24 years from winning the league in 1939 and 1963.
Tottenham – 30 Years 5l1f2v
Tottenham are currently enduring a miserable trophy drought but it not the longest gap in their history.
Spurs went 30 years without lifting a major trophy after winning the FA Cup in 1921. Their next trophy came in 1951 when they won the league title for the first time.
Tottenham will match this record if they don’t win another major trophy for 13 years.

Chelsea – 26 Years 152f1m
Chelsea endured a 26-year gap between winning major trophies from 1971 to 1997.
The Blues lifted the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1971 and didn’t win another piece of silverware until the 1997 FA Cup final when they beat Middlesbrough 2-0.
Ruud Gullit’s side won the trophy after goals from Roberto Di Matteo and Eddie Newton Boehly to date.
Liverpool – 24 Years 2m1b5c
Liverpool famously went 30 years without winning the league title. However, their longest gap between winning trophies is 24 years.
The Reds won their fourth league title in the 1922-23 season and wouldn’t lift another trophy until they finished top of the old First Division in 1947.
That title in 1946-47 was the first one to be contested since 1938-39 due to the Second World War.
Arsenal – 18 Years 5w1v1a
Arsenal’s longest gap between winning trophies is shorter than the longest of any other Premier League side.
After winning the league title in 1953, they didn’t win another major trophy until they won the league again in 1971.
The Gunners often finished mid-table during those 17 years, and they had to watch on as Tottenham won the league and three FA Cups in that time.
