Luke Humphries has hit back at comments claiming that his rivalry with Luke Littler is becoming ‘boring’, insisting that fans ‘should enjoy’ seeing the world’s best players facing off against each other.

World No. 1 Luke Humphries has defended his rivalry with reigning world champion Luke Littler, claiming that fans ‘should enjoy’ seeing the world’s best face off against each other and insisted that their meetings are not becoming ‘boring’.

Humphries bested Littler in a thrilling final on Night 14 of the Premier League in Leeds last week, averaging 100.96 to win 6-5, thus sealing his third nightly victory of the campaign to keep his hopes of finishing first in the table alive.

The 30-year-old, who trails league leader Littler by seven points with just two nights remaining, has clashed with the 18-year-old six times across the 14 weeks, with their record standing at three wins apiece.

Given the frequency of their meetings, the Premier League format has drawn criticism from fans and pundits, with many claiming that seeing the same players go head-to-head against each other over and over is boring to watch.

Hitting back at the criticisms, Humphries said: “I think it all depends on what you want to see. Do you want to see the best players in the world playing against each other? Or do you not want to? You want to wait six months for it?

“That’s the argument. I think a lot of people say how it gets boring, but I tell you what, I love watching the two best sportsmen in the world going against each other in other sports.

“You watch boxing and you see [Chris] Eubank and [Conor] Benn, what a fight that was. Would I want to see that 20 times? Yeah, I would, because it was a great fight. I won’t want to go and watch them fight against other people that weren’t as good, because it wouldn’t be as fun.

“Of course, I understand that when you’re playing each other a lot it does get tedious. But for me as a sport fan, I just personally love seeing the best go against each other.

“I think fans should enjoy it. It’s two of the best players in the world playing against each other.”

The 2024 PDC World Champion continued: “Hopefully, in my opinion, I want to see him in the Premier League final as well, because I just love playing against him.

“No disrespect to anyone else, but when you are playing against him, you have to be at your best. If you’re not, you’ll get beaten. It gets you out of bed and makes you want to play better. I enjoy it more than any other game of darts.”

The Premier League heads to Aberdeen for Night 15 on Thursday, where Littler and Humphries meet in a top-of-the-table clash, Michael van Gerwen faces Nathan Aspinall, Chris Dobey entertains Rob Cross and Gerwyn Price takes on bottom of the table Stephen Bunting in the four quarter-final fixtures.
