Another season of Women’s Super League has finished as Chelsea claimed their record eighth title. However, in disappointing news for the fans of women’s football, the 2024-25 season saw a decline in match attendance after multiple years of consistent growth. As per the calculations done by Sportscasting.com, the match average match attendance in WSL witnessed a 5.1% decline in 2024/25.

FA’s Women’s Super League has come a long way from its inception in 2011. The league has specifically gained popularity and stature in the last few years. Interest in the league rapidly increased after the FA struck a record-breaking three-year domestic television rights deal with Sky Sports and BBC, starting with the 2021–22 season in March 2021.
Match attendance in WSL games reached its peak during the 2023-24 season, as 7363 fans attended every game on average. This record was set following a significant 41% increase from the average attendance during the 2022-23 season. During the 22-23 season, an average of 5,222 fans attended every game. Meanwhile, during the 2021-22 season, only an average of 1,921 fans attended every game. It must be noted that the 21-22 season was disrupted by the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
However, this trend of growth reversed during the 2024-25 season as match attendance went down after seeing sustained growth. During the 24-25 season, an average of 6,985 fans attended every game, indicating a 5.1% decrease from the previous season. The North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham was attended by a record crowd as 56,784 fans attended the game at the Emirates Stadium.
This decline in match attendance seems to be the after-effect of the extensive attention women’s football in England attracted in 2022 and 23. The Three Lioness created history by lifting the trophy at Euro 2022 and also reached the final at the World Cup 2023. In contrast, 2024 proved to be an uneventful year for the national team, and that seems to be reflected in WSL match attendance.
