It took Liverpool just under 12 minutes to break the deadlock at home and the roof nearly came off Anfield as Cody Gakpo fired home his second Premier League goal of the season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an inch perfect ball over the top to Mohamed Salah, who whipped an incisive ball in from the right wing with Gakpo waiting at the back post.

The ball from Salah was delivered with such precision that Gakpo simply couldn’t miss and Liverpool had a deserved lead early on against the champions.

Shortly after their first goal the Reds had an opportunity to double their lead as Virgil van Dijk met a corner with his full force, but the defender’s bullet header flew just wide of the mark much to the Dutchman’s frustration.

Manchester City looked void of ideas in the first half and with just one shot to speak of in the first period, Liverpool deservedly led at the break. Of course a lead of just one goal is always precarious against City but this side certainly doesn’t feel like the unstoppable force we have got used to over the last few years.

The visitors improved in the second half, but they still failed to create any clear cut opportunities and Liverpool never looked out of control in the game.

Liverpool finally got their opportunity to finish off City in the 75th minute, as a mix up in the visitors’ defence left Luis Diaz through on goal with only Ortega to beat.

The German had no choice but to take out Diaz just inside the box and with Salah stepping up to take the penalty, there was only ever going to be one outcome.

The Egyptian fired his spot kick into the bottom right corner to double Liverpool’s advantage and move him one goal off Erling Haaland in the Premier League golden boot race.

Liverpool’s win sends the Reds nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table and they look unstoppable right now, with a trip to Newcastle next up on Wednesday night.

Manchester City on the other hand are struggling and struggling bad. Pep Guardiola’s side is winless in their last seven matches in all competitions, with their last league win coming against Southampton at the end of October.

City are now fifth in the Premier League and desperate for a win with Nottingham Forest coming up on Wednesday.
