A Nottinghamshire pub became the talk of the country after they inadvertently scored a spectacular own goal on Saturday afternoon.

The Gedling Inn promised thirsty punters a free pint with every goal that Nottingham Forest scored against Brighton at the City Ground.

After last weekend’s sobering 5-0 lashing at the hands of Bournemouth, the pub’s hierarchy probably weren’t expecting to part ways with many freebies.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side ran riot and downed the Seagulls on seven separate occasions on their way to a rousing 7-0 triumph.

FREE PINT WHEN FOREST SCORE,’ was written on the pub’s official Facebook page on the morning of the game. And to be fair to the owners of the Gedling Inn, they stuck to their promise.

The Nottinghamshire pub behind the giveaway has already generated global interest and reached various news outlets across the world. Not bad going for an offer that ‘backfired.’

During Saturday’s thrashing, the carnage began to unfold when Lewis Dunk scored an own goal after 12 minutes. Shortly after, Morgan Gibbs-White got in on the act.

Chris Wood scored his first of the afternoon and Forest’s third with just 32 minutes gone. Punters were well and truly treated to a boozy second-half when the Tricky Trees rattled in another four goals.

Wood scored his second and third to complete a stunning Premier League hat-trick. Just before last orders, Neco Williams and Jota Silva got involved and helped complete the onslaught.

True to their word, the owners of the Gedling Inn dished out and estimated 300 free pints. Punters were quick to share images of their freebies across social media.

The pub posted via Facebook on Monday morning thanking everyone for all the shares and coverage their business has received in extremely unusual circumstances.

Concluding the post was a cheeky and not-so subtle hint at Nottingham Forest to help foot the bill. Just imagine, hat-trick hero Chris Wood popping in for a swift half and to cover the losses. After all, it would only be fair!
