Spanish champions Real Madrid played out a thrilling 4-4 draw with Real Sociedad in the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Tuesday night, 1 April, securing a place in the final with a 5-4 aggregate victory. 

With the aggregate score level at 4-4, the game went into extra time. Then, in the second half of the additional 30 minutes, substitute Antonio Rudiger connected with Arda Guler’s corner to fire the All-Whites into the 2025 Copa del Rey final.

They will meet either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid in the final in Seville.

Real Madrid had a decent start at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, with Endrick and Vinicius Junior getting early sights at goal. Alex Remiro made a fine save to keep Vinicius from extending Los Blancos’ advantage.

Having weathered the early storm, Real Sociedad landed a body blow in the 16th minute. Pablo Marin brought Ander Barrenetxea into play with a cheeky flick. The left-winger then zipped into the box and sent a powerful strike through Andriy Lunin’s legs and into the back of the net, bringing the tie back level.

At the half-hour mark, Real Madrid claimed their advantage back, with the Brazilian connection between Vinicius Jr. and Endrick paying dividends. The No. 7 sent his countryman through on goal with a fine outside-the-boot , and the youngster applied a dinked finish to beat Remiro.

The game truly came alive in the final quarter of regulation time, with Real Madrid and Real Sociedad scoring five goals in the last 20 minutes.

David Alaba found the back of his own net in the 72nd minute after making an unfortunate with Pablo Marin’s low cross. Eight minutes later, Mikel Oyarzabal fired Sociedad ahead on aggregate. His shot from inside the box took a deflection off Alaba before beating Andriy Lunin.

Madrid, however, were in no mood to go down without a fight. Just two minutes later, Jude Bellingham made it 3-2 on the night with a thumping volley from inside the box. In the 86th minute, Aurelien Tchouameni score his first goal of the 2024-25 season, putting Los Blancos back ahead on aggregate. The Frenchman’s header seemed destined to be the final act of the game until Oyarzabal nodded home from a free kick in the third minute of stoppage time.

With nothing to separate the two teams (4-4), the game went into extra time. Both teams were visibly exhausted, causing the intensity to drop. The match ultimately got its final act in the 115th minute, as Antonio Rudiger connected with fellow substitute Arda Guler’s inch-perfect corner, sending his powerful header into the Sociedad goal.

The Ukranian goalkeeper looked cool under pressure and made two saves. He, however, should have done better at his near post for Sociedad’s first goal.

The captain, Lucas Vazquez, had a night to forget as he gave Ander Barrenetxea a clean run at goal for Sociedad’s opener. He created three chances and won four tackles but could not redeem himself.

The Frenchman did not light up the midfield, but he played his role to perfection. He won two tackles, delivered two accurate long balls, made three interceptions, and scored a fine header. A solid shift.

The ever-reliable Fede Valverde had a disappointing night against La Real. His positioning was off, he did not offer much going forward, and he sometimes looked a bit lost in possession.

The star of the show, Jude Bellingham, scored a brilliant volley in the 82nd minute. He also created a game-high four chances, delivered seven accurate long balls, made three recoveries, and drew a whopping seven fouls — more than any other player on the pitch.
