There was always going to be goals in Tottenham’s clash against Southampton on Sunday with two of the league’s most leaky defences on display and it didn’t take long for the hosts to score.

Brennan Johnson gave Tottenham an early lead as he was able to convert Djed Spence’s cutback with a simple enough finish into the roof of the net for his 10th goal of the season.

Southampton went close just before the Spurs goal but almost immediately after Kamaldeen Sulemana struck the post, the Saints found themselves behind.

Tottenham thought they were 2-0 up when Lucas Bergvall had the ball in the net just before half time but after an extremely lengthy VAR check the Swede’s first Premier League goal was ruled out for offside.

Just over two minutes after the disallowed goal Spurs did double their disadvantage as Johnson scored his second of the game from close range after another sloppy defensive error from the Saints.

In the second half Tottenham were able to coast to an easy three points with their win officially confirming Southampton’s relegation straight back down to the Championship after one season in the top flight.

Their complacency cost them right at the very end of the game, as Mateus Fernandes grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time.

Tottenham’s two goal lead was restored right at the very end as Mathys Tel scored his first Premeir League goal for Spurs from the penalty spot.

Southampton still looking to avoid unwanted history 5r431a

After a surprising draw against in form Crystal Palace last weekend, normal order was resumed for Southampton on Sunday as they fell to their 25th defeat of the season.

With another week going by without any points for the Saints, they have moved one step closer to Derby County’s most unwanted Premier League record. Derby finished with just 11 points in 2007-08 which is the lowest ever recorded in the league’s history.

Southampton need just two points to move above Derby’s tally but that is certainly easier said than done for a side that has just two wins this year.

The run in isn’t an easy one for the Saints either as they still have to face Manchester City, Arsenal and Aston Villa before the season is over. Games against Leicester, West Ham and Everton could provide Southampton with a chance to avoid the unwanted record though.
