The Crystal Palace vs Brighton ‘M23 derby’ is certainly one of the stranger derbies in English football but it always proves to be a feisty affair, and Saturday’s edition was no different.

Jean-Philippe Mateta rifled a shot into the roof of the net to break the deadlock after just two minutes, scoring his first Premier League goal since suffering a nasty head injury against Millwall in the FA Cup where the striker had to receive 25 stitches.

Despite the Eagles’ quick start, it was a close game at Selhurst Park from the get go and Brighton were level after just over half an hour.

Danny Welbeck marked his return to the Seagulls lineup with his eighth goal of the campaign as he snuck in behind the Palace back line to flick a shot past Dean Henderson in goal.

After half time Palace came out firing again and they scored another early goal to get themselves back in front. Daniel Munoz picked up the ball well outside the Brighton box and with a low driven shot he was able to find the bottom corner to send the home fans into a wild frenzy.

If it wasn’t already a fiery affair, the game took a complete turn on the 78th minute when Eddie Nketiah was rightfully shown a straight red for a high boot.

As the Eagles tried to hold on to their slender lead in the dying minutes another red card was brandished, this time to Marc Guehi for a rough challenge when already on a yellow card.

Once the hosts were reduced to nine men it was very much every player behind the ball right until the final whistle.

Just when the drama seemed to finally be over, yet another red card was shown, as Jan Paul van Hecke was shown a second yellow for a foul on Daichi Kamada that prevnted the Brighton star from scoring.

With Crystal Palace able to hold on for the win, the Eagles have now won four of their last five games with an impressive run sending them up to 11th in the table.

The loss for Brighton could be a big one by the end of the year, as the Seagulls weren’t able to close the gap down to the top seven who all have games in hand over the chasing pack.
