Dubbed the fixture of the round by many, Premier League leaders Manchester City headed to the English capital to take on Tottenham in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday evening.

City came into the tie off the back of five successive victories in all competitions, beating Southampton 1-0 at the weekend, while Spurs fell to a bitterly disappointing 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last time out.

Ange Postecoglou’s side had an opportunity to bounce back against the Cityzens on Wednesday though, and they got off to a perfect start, with Timo Werner netting his first goal of the campaign to put the hosts ahead after five minutes.

20 minutes later, Pape Matar Sarr doubled Tottenham‘s advantage in fantastic fashion by curling an effort from the edge of the area beyond Stefan Ortega into the bottom corner.

This is when Manchester City began to wake up, and just as Spurs thought they held a two-goal advantage heading into the midway point, Mateus Nunes delivered a hammer blow, halving the deficit seconds before the half time whistle.

Credit to the hosts, they came back out and defended resolutely, denying Pep Guardiola’s side a leveller, and booked their place in the quarter-final draw after maintaining their one-goal lead in the second half.
